A Powerful Post and LSS Press

21 04 2008

A Serious Subject:

Normally a silly guy, author Jim Hines,

, posted a serious and moving post today about a male perspective on rape and sexual assault. I think he deserves a round of applause for doing this! His honesty is refreshing. It is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and this is a topic well worth serious discussion in public forums, especially because it is one a lot of people bottle up and refuse to talk about. Women (and less often, men) who are victims of sexual abuse are often shamed into silence, and this is a real shame because they have NOTHING to be ashamed of! My hat’s off to Jim for doing such a fine job of speaking out for those who may feel uncomfortable to speak out for themselves.

Some Good News:

Eric Marin, editor of Lone Star Stories, is putting together his first anthology. Since 2004, Eric has been running Lone Star Stories paying authors from his own pocket (…and working his way through his slush piles with remarkable speed — you got to love those 1 day turnarounds!). He has put out a lot of great reading over the years, and now is our chance to give back. Run by the LSS Press website to pre-order your copy today!

Jim Hines: Ditto. There are always serious things in this world, and often is it a good thing to voice them to bring thme into awareness better.

Erin Marin: Me gonna buy!

I’ve read your posts a while now, and I have to mention that I like your title/handle…

I am originally from Louisiana, and when I go to write a bit of something different from my normal hard SF fare, it usually drifts to a swamp, with a lot of the color I grew up with in the tone. Southern Fried Weirdness just seems so –neat.

Thanks for the compliment about the handle. I think it fits me pretty well.

Preferring the highlands, I am more of a Appalachia kind of guy, but I also understand your love of the swamp. If you look in the background of my profile pic, you see what looks like a bunch of leaves on the ground. This photo was actually taken by my wife on a walkway through a swamp near my home in early autumn of last year. The water was completely covered by the dry leaves; it was hard to tell where the land ended and the water began.

We head there pretty regularly, and have worked with a local university in the past to help clean it up. It offers a lot of inspiration for me year round. Just watching the various microcosms of life makes me think of all sorts of other worlds just waiting to be written about.
