Progress

26 07 2008

I started writing the last book in my trilogy last night. Beginning this felt clunky and awkward, but I made some progress. I’m already into the first action scene which of course makes it fun for me. That’s the good thing about writing a sequel, you can really get right into the action without all that build-up, because the build-up is already there from the previous books. I really am happy to be writing these characters again, but it’s slow going as I keep having to reference things from the previous books. After I get this done, I look forward to writing more stand alone projects. With this book the rules/races/worlds are already static and predefined so I need to stay consistent instead of creating new races/worlds which I really like to do. I did introduce a new race of creature in the second chapter, but it was one that was already hinted at in the other books — just not defined.

Okay. Done for the day. Now it’s time to get out and play with my boys.

That sounds familiar, except I’m only at the first book of my series. This, I hope, will be the final revision.

I haven’t even begun revising. The first book is in good shape (it’s had 2 drafts) the second book needs a lot of work (still just a first draft), but I don’t want to do any major revising until I finish this third book. My fear is that I come to a point near the end of this book where I realize something needs to be changed in the first book so that the ending makes sense, or a major plotline needs revision from the get-go. This trilogy/series thing is a lot more complicated than anything else I’ve ever tried to accomplish.

I’ve read too many series where I felt the author took the books to another place that made no sense going back and reading the first book. I really want to make this little trilogy consistent.

That’s what happened to me, finished the first book and started the second, (80K) when I realized that I need to change major things. Not the plotline, but what seems “nothing to it” when you think about it turns out a lot of work.

Your plan seems sound. Gool luck.

That’s a big fear for me. Rewriting something is not something I really want to do, but this way I can make changes if I have to. The manuscript isn’t tied up with some agent or publisher, or worse, already published, if I realize the story wants to go a direction altogether different than it was going when I started.

The best of luck with this last book in the trilogy. Over two and half thousand words in a day isn’t bad in my books.

Hope you had fun with your boys. I know how important that is too. 🙂

Thanks. I’m happy with that word count. I’m hoping to get in another 1500-2000 words today if time allows (in other words, while the baby takes his nap).
