Top 5’s from 2007

6 01 2008

A little late, but I wanted to post my top 5 diversions by category in no particular order. Some of these may have come out prior to 2007, but that is when I read/saw/listened to them:

*Modest Mouse, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank
*Rush, Snakes and Arrows
*Dinosaur Jr., Beyond
*The Killers, Sawdust
*Radiohead, In Rainbows

*Pan’s Labyrinth
*The Host

Honorable/Dishonorable Mention: Terry Gilliam’s Tideland — my verdict is still out on this one. Visually stunning and twisted. Perhaps a little too twisted for my taste (seriously that’s tough to do…) Memorable for sure, but I’m not sure if for the right reasons. Worth watching but be warned it is disturbing. Any parent will be sickened by what this little girl goes through.

*The Yiddish Policeman’s Union by Michael Chabon
*The Road  by Cormac McCarthy
*Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield
*The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
*The Crimson Comet by Dean Morrissey and Stephen Krensky (a children’s book I found in a discount bin — I bought it for my four-year-old, but enjoy it as much if not more than him)
